  • Beschrijving: During a shipwreck, Maria Merfati loses her only daughter, Liza, but refuses to believe that the little girl is really dead. For six long years, she never stops looking for her. Indeed, Liza had been saved by a passing ship following the wreck. The seamen had brought her to an old fisherman, who then handed the girl over to a Gypsy man with the assurance that he would take her back to her parents. But Liza was forced to stay with the Gypsy, to follow him around and beg for money at fairs. One day, Liza meets Maria, who takes an immediately liking to her. The Gypsy tries to bargain with her, and Maria figures out that he must have something to do with her daughter and that she is alive. With the help of an orphan boy, Lefteris, who is coming to Athens to enter an orphanage, Liza runs away from the Gypsy, and the two children manage to find the “nice lady’s” house in Athens. Maria and her husband, Alekos, finally find their long-lost daughter and decide to adopt Lefteris as well, since the boy risked his own life to save Liza from the hands of the Gypsy.
